Religion in the Boundless

The Order of the Crown is a faith that arose in the dangerous post-collapse world of the Boundless. Its followers believe that mountains are living structures, each possessing a will of its own. Beneath them lies the Heart of the Mountain, a source of power, memory and creation that survived the collapse.
The Crown represents the power of the Heart. Whether it is an ancient object, a sacred title, a role inherited by the chosen or a connection between a person and the mountain remains unknown. The Order teaches that the collapse began when humanity placed itself above the natural world and attempted to control forces it did not understand. Its purpose is therefore to restore balance, protect the Heart and prevent anyone from using its power to dominate the Boundless.
The Order is secretive, believing that some truths become dangerous when spoken aloud. Its rituals centre on stone, silence and endurance. Initiates may spend days underground listening to the rock or memorising inscriptions. Its priests, known as Keepers of the Crown, wear dark metal bands and carry fragments of mountain stone as symbols of their vows.
The Order teaches that every stone retains memories, even if humanity has forgotten how to interpret them. Its settlements are often well defended, and its members understand the mountains better than most travellers. They know which tunnels are safe, which peaks should not be climbed and which sounds indicate movement beneath the ground.
This knowledge comes with a demand for obedience. The Order may accuse dissenters of weakening the Crown or inviting the return of the chaos that destroyed the old world. Even among its own members, the true nature of the Heart and the Crown remains uncertain. The Heart may be a sacred force, an ancient machine or something beyond human understanding. The Crown may be only a religious symbol—or a real mechanism capable of changing the world.
In this uncertainty, the Order embodies one of the central tensions of the Boundless: the desire to understand the forces that survived the collapse, and the danger of believing that understanding grants the right to control them.
Among the Elementists there exists a smaller and more mysterious tradition devoted to the living forces of the natural world. Some of its followers believe that the sand of the Wastelands possesses a soul, or that countless fragments of memory move within it. They teach that the sand once belonged to a greater sea, an ancient body of water that comforted and sustained its spirit before the collapse.
These Elementists search the Wastelands for traces of the lost sea. They follow buried currents, salt deposits, drowned ruins and changes in the wind. Their journey is both physical and spiritual: they hope to reunite the wandering sand with the sea that once comforted its soul.
Other Elementists consider this belief symbolic. To them, the lost sea represents balance, belonging and the world that existed before the Boundless. Their rituals involve listening to the wind across the dunes, tracing patterns in the sand and carrying small vessels of water as offerings to the desert.
